Downtown Cincinnati Holiday Guide: What's going on in December

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! We hope you had a great Thanksgiving with friends and family in the Queen City. With December upon us, there are plenty of events to put on your calendar, food to eat, and places to shop in Downtown Cincinnati and Over-the-Rhine. Here’s what is going on in December!

EVENTS

DECEMBER 5 – BLACK SANTA AT CAREW TOWER

Bring your own camera for photos with Santa Galen in a festive North Pole setting on the first floor of the Carew Tower Arcade. Stop by the letter writing station and drop off your letter into the Macy’s Believe mailbox that goes straight to Santa at the North Pole. Santa Galen will be at the Carew Tower on December 5, December 12, and December 19.

DECEMBER 7 – DOWNTOWN DAZZLE

Macy’s Downtown Dazzle is one of the biggest highlights of the holiday season. See Santa rappel off a Cincinnati skyrise and wait with anticipation for the sky to fill with light thanks to a fabulous Rozzi fireworks display. The fun starts every Saturday at 5:30 p.m. this month.

ALL DECEMBER – ICE SKATING

The UC Health Ice Rink, presented by Fifth Third Bank, celebrated its Opening Weekend on November 2 and 3 at Fountain Square. The rink is now open through Feb. 2. Amenities include lockers, benches, a warming tent, and a full-service concessions tent with hot and cold snacks, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The rink is open to skaters of all ages, 7 days a week.

 

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

 

DECEMBER 7 – A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS AT TAFT THEATRE

Back by popular demand, bring your family and celebrate the season with The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s live rendition of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at Taft Theatre for multiple shows on December 7, 13, 14, and 15. Tickets are available online.

DECEMBER 7 – THE SNOWMAN AT MUSIC HALL

Introduce your family to “The Snowman,” a timeless animated classic full of wonder and magic. Get lost in the film as it plays above the stage and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra brings Howard Blake’s beautiful score to life at Music Hall on Saturday, December 7 at 10:30 a.m.

DECEMBER 11 – MAKE A HOLIDAY KISSING BALL AT KROHN

Join Krohn Conservatory to learn how to create an evergreen kissing ball to hang in your home for the holidays on December 11 at 6 p.m. For $22, a ticket gets you all the materials to make your kissing ball and one drink ticket for wine or beer.

DECEMBER 12 – HOLIDAY HOUSE PARTY AT TAFT MUSEUM

‘Tis the season to celebrate! Head to the Taft Museum of Art for this month’s House Party on Thursday, December 12 at 5 p.m. Create keepsake cards and swirled painted ornaments. Sip on some hot spiked apple cider accompanied by light bites and live music.

DECEMBER 14 – SANTA’S WORKSHOP AT WASHINGTON PARK

This year ditch the annual trip to see Santa at the mall and come down to Washington Park to see Santa Claus. Santa Claus and his merry band of elves will be spending time at the park on December 14 at 1 p.m. Bring your family, your dog, or your friends – and don’t forget your camera!

STARTING DECEMBER 19 – THE NUTCRACKER AT CINCINNATI BALLET

Celebrate the holiday season with The Nutcracker by the Cincinnati Ballet at Music Hall. You can witness the magic of Tchaikovsky’s timeless score performed by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at multiple showings from December 19- through December 29.

DECEMBER 20 – A CHRISTMAS EVENING WITH OVER THE RHINE AT MEMORIAL HALL

Nederlander Entertainment and Memorial Hall present a Christmas Evening with Over the Rhine and special guest Lucy Wainwright Roche. Check out the musicians perform at Memorial Hall from Friday, December 20 through December 22. Purchase tickets online.

DECEMBER 7 – RHINEGEIST 5TH ANNUAL DAD DAY

Dad Day at Rhinegeist is back on December 7 at noon! Stop in for a hoppy Holiday Ale, music from a DJ, and plaid family photo opportunities.

DECEMBER 8 – BRUNCH.ART.HOLIDAY MUSIC AT THE CINCINNATI ART MUSEUM

Enjoy some brunch, art and holiday music at the Cincinnati Art Museum on December 8 at noon. Visitors will be invited to connect what they hear with objects in the permanent collection.

DECEMBER 14 – SANTACON

The 12th annual Santacon takes over Downtown Cincinnati, the Banks and Over-the-Rhine on December 14. There is an expected 10,000 Santas participating this year. Stop down and get merry with cheer (or beer) at all of Cincinnati’s best bars. Register online for a wristband.

DECEMBER 19 – FINISH THE LYRIC, CHRISTMAS SONGS, AT QUEEN CITY EXCHANGE

Come finish the lyrics to some of the best Christmas songs at Queen City Exchange on December 19 at 8 p.m. The bar plays a clip of a song and you finish the lyric to win points for your team. Prizes go to the top three teams!

DECEMBER 31 – BOOTLEGGER’S BASH AT QUEEN CITY RADIO

The Roaring Twenties are back at Queen City Radio! Cincinnati has a rich history with Prohibition, but there will be no shortage of booze this time around. Don’t forget to dress up. The fun starts at 4 p.m. on December 31.

DECEMBER 7 – WINTER MARKET AT FOUNTAIN SQUARE

The Winter Market at Fountain Square will feature regional artisans and crafters in newly designed huts. You’re sure to find something special for everyone on your list. The market will offer full concessions including beer and wine, along with delicious food from local businesses. The market is going to be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the month.

DECEMBER 7 – FINDLAY MARKET HOLIDAY MARKET

Local artisans and craft vendors set up shop at Findlay Market for a weekend filled with holiday cheer, gift shopping, and seasonal food and drink. The Holiday Market is the best place in town to find the perfect local gift for everyone on your list while enjoying holiday entertainment by local choirs and musicians, food demos and samples.

DECEMBER 11 – WOMEN ON MAIN

Support the women-owned businesses of Main Street in Downtown Cincinnati during a Wednesday Walk with giveaways, promotional offers and raffles. Stop at each location on Main Street for special discounts and prizes on December 11 at 5 p.m.
